Sam Bennett has extended his lead in the points classification at the Tour de France and said he was honoured to wear the green jersey today.
The Irish cyclist took that jersey after stage 6 yesterday when he was 3rd on the day and also took more points than Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) at the intermediate sprint.
And while neither Bennett nor Sagan featured on the summit finish today, they both fought for the points at the stage 6 intermediate sprint.
While the breakaway, featuring Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb), mopped up the most points, Bennett was active in the sprint from the peloton.
He was first of the peloton over the sprint line at Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort; 10th in the gallop just ahead of his Deceuninck-QuickStep team mate Michael Mørkøv, with Sagan two more places back.
That meant Bennett took six points and Sagan took three
and at the end of the stage the Irish cyclist had 129 points and Sagan 117 in
second place in the classification, which he has won seven times in the last
eight years.
“Wearing this jersey today was amazing, a lovely
experience. People applauded me, I heard my name as the stage progressed, and
to see the support I got was just beautiful,” Sam Bennett said at the finish.
“Coming into the Tour it wasn’t a goal, but it would be a huge honour to win it. I know it’s still a long way to Paris and a lot of work has to be put in to conquer this jersey, but I will take it day by day and see what happens.”
