Sam Bennett said he asked his team mates to make Race
Torquay harder on his way to taking his second victory of the season just two
weeks into the 2020 campaign.
The 30-year-old won the race in a bunch sprint after also
claiming the opening stage of the Tour Down Under last week.
With the mood high in the Deceuninck-QuickStep camp, Bennett sounded very confident in his form in
his post-race remarks.
He said that during
the 133km race – over 10 laps of an undulating circuit – he had asked his team
to increase the pace to make it harder.
“After an
aggressive start, things became pretty controlled, so I asked the guys to make
it harder and kick off the race again, and that’s when Dries went and forced the
others to chase,” he said.
“It all came
together later and I got an armchair ride to the line. I like the course and
the length of the race, even though it was harder than advertised.
“It has a bit of
everything for everyone, and winning this event after being elevated to UCI
status gives me a lot of satisfaction”, added Bennett who had twice won the
race’s previous incarnation Race Melbourne.
And with his second win in the bag already for this season, he was immediately looking ahead to the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race; the WorldTour one-day event this weekend.
“This success makes me very happy and feeds my confidence ahead of Sunday, when I hope to be again up there with a shot at victory.
“The credit goes to the team, who did again a great job and were always there for me."
