In his pomp: Ciaran Power has been forced out of his comeback to Ireland's showpiece race, where he claimed two overall victories and seven stage wins. Seen here winning Rás stage 4 into Listowel in 2006.
Former professional rider, Ciarán Power has had to withdraw from the An Post Rás which starts this Sunday in Dunboyne, Co Meath.
The Waterford native had set himself a target of not only returning to the race after several years away from the sport, but even boldly predicting he could be in the hunt for a stage win.
Power was set to return to help raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute after his wife Lisa had undergone treatment for disease.
His withdrawal will come as a huge blow to him and indeed the race as he remains one of the most popular riders of the modern era.
Lisa was diagnosed with cancer last year and having endured a difficult battle, she is currently making a good recovery.
Power told stickybottle recently it was Lisa who suggested he get back on his bike.
However, following news of his mother’s ill health, he has decided to pull out and offer his place for another rider to take up.
The team, as it stands, includes Stephen Murray, Michael McNena, Andrew Roche and Robin Kelly.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances this week with my mam’s health it is with regret that I have to withdraw from the Rás at this late stage,” he said on his Facebook page today.
“All monies donated to, or through, me will be forwarded on to the Irish Breast Cancer Research Institute.
“Having been supported my whole life by great parents and family it is now our time to be there for our fantastic, kind and lovable mam.”
Power had been training hard since deciding to return to the race he won twice – in 1998 and 2002 – and took seven stages in despite not riding it in the years when he competed abroad, including at the Giro d’Italia.
He had completed the Kerry group Rás Mumhan and the Tour of Ulster in the past month in preparation for next week’s event, which he was looking forward to.
Hopefully his comeback to be competitive again will continue and above all that his mother’s health improves. From all at stickybottle we wish him and his family our very best at a difficult time for them.
