Racing at the Club Rothaiochta Na Sionainne Classic in Co
Clare was stopped midway earlier today after a crash involving a number of
riders and a motorist in a car.
The incident occurred in the A2-A3 event on a wide stretch of road when the bunch was going fast downhill.
Stickybottle understands one rider towards the last section
of the bunch and a driver in an oncoming car were involved in a crash.
The rider came off his bike, crashing into the direction
of the bunch. A number of other cyclists also crashed as a result.
The incident took place at about 11.30am in the area of
Firgrove near Shannon on the R458.
In total six riders were treated at the scene for
injuries and two were taken to hospital; the first faller the most seriously
injured.
However, he is now conscious in hospital and has also
been diagnosed with a number of broken ribs.
Because he sustained a head impact during the crash he is set to remain in University Hospital Limerick for observation as a precautionary measure.
Stickybottle understands he is conscious and has been
able to communicate with those around him.
The other cyclist who required hospital treatment has
since been discharged and while four others also had injuries tended to, they
were less seriously hurt.
An ambulance crew was on duty at the race and fortunately
they were able to intervene quickly and go to the aid of the injured.
Because the incident was a serious one, as it involved a
motorist in a vehicle a number of riders, a decision was taken to halt the
racing.
A number of other ambulances were also dispatched the
scene when the alarm was raised, with a fire brigade crew and gardai joining
them.
The road was sealed off for a period and the racing was not restarted, meaning the events - the A2-A3 race and separate A4 race - were effectively cancelled midway; an understandable measure.
We extend our best wishes to all involved and wish all of
them a speedy and full recovery.
