Nairo Quintana has suffered a crash out training in Colombia when a driver overtook him too closely and knocked him off his bike.
The 30-year-old Arkéa-Samsic rider appears to have escaped serious injury though his team said he was awaiting the results of X-rays.
Quintana was hit by the driver in Motavita and the region’s Twitter account shared news of the crash, with photos of the rider apparently being helped by locals after the incident.
"He came up behind me, I couldn't see him or anything, he was on the white line and hit me,” Quintana said of the driver who hit him after passing too closely.
“I have a small scratch, a blow on my right knee and another blow on my left thigh, which is where I hit the rearview mirror of the vehicle that hit me.”
His manager Giuseppe Acquadro said all the indications were that there were no lasting injuries, though confirmation of that was awaited.
"He took a hit on his left knee and is now in the hospital to do x-rays. He was doing an uphill test and he was at full speed. A car hit him with the mirror and ended up on the ground."
Quintana has looked resurgent in the early season after departing Movistar for Arkéa-Samsic. He won a stage and the overall at Tour de La Provence and at Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var (2.1) before claiming a Paris-Nice stage win.
