Clonmel National Road Champs off after funding issue; hunt on for new venue

Clonmel CC was due to host the National Road and Time Trial Championships this year but has been forced to withdraw. The Tipperary club last held the event in 2012 when Matt Brammeier won the third of his four road race titles during a fantastic promotion.

Cycling Ireland is seeking expressions of interest from those willing to host this year’s National Road Championships after initial hosts Clonmel CC were forced to withdraw their bid due to a funding shortfall.

The club was due to host the road and time trial title races for elite men and women, U23s and Masters categories after a fantastic promotion in 2012.

Garry Nugent, Cycling Ireland’s events officer, said because the nationals were awarded on a rotational basis, clubs from Munster will get priority this year.

However, should no club come forward by next Wednesday the championships  will be open to any club in the country.

“All I can tell you is Clonmel CC had local funding issues, other than that I don’t know,” said Nugent.

“We’ve put it out to all the Munster clubs to see if anyone is interested in running the event and we’ve given them until the 10th of February to come back to us.”

Nugent said while he was disappointed that Clonmel CC couldn’t host the event, it had put on a superb championships four years ago.

“Running bike races is an expensive business,” he said. “It’s the national championships so we will find a club willing to take the event on.

“It’s just unfortunate what’s happened to Clonmel but running races is very difficult and things can change very, very quickly on you.”

The chairperson and vice-chairperson of Clonmel CC were not reachable today at the time of writing.
