Irish riders have been in action in the pro bunch in France and Croatia in recent days, with our top juniors racing in the UK.
In action last weekend for Team Ireland were juniors Clodagh Gallagher and Maeve Gallagher.
They were riding the Witham Hall Junior Women’s Grand Prix in Stamford, Lincolnshire, on Sunday. It was the first round of the National Junior Women’s Road Race Series.
While Orla Desmond and Lara Gillespie were also due to ride on the team they were ruled out through illness and injury respectively.
However, Maeve Gallagher and Clodagh Gallagher went into action, finishing the race against the top British juniors in 31st and 50th.
It was won solo by Pfeiffer Georgi (Liv Cycling-Halo), with Kim Baptista (Torelli-Brother) winning the sprint for 2nd from Corinne Side (Racing Chance Foundation).
In France, Philip Deignan is riding the Tour of Alps where his Team Sky leader Chris Froome is coming into shape.
Deignan has been on team duties helping control the race for Froome, who is now 4th overall after three stages.
Philip Deignan was 71st on the opening stage, won by Pello Bilbao (Astana). On stage 2 Deignan was 81st; the stage won by Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) with Froome 4th.
And yesterday the Irish rider was 93rd as Froome finished 6th to retain fourth overall. Deignan is 81st in the general standings with two stages remaining.
Yesterday’s stage was won by Ben O’Connor (Dimension Data), with Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) leading overall.
At the Tour of Croatia Conor Dunne is action with Aqua Blue Sport; the sole Irishman in the race.
On Tuesday’s opening stage he was 114th at 51 seconds. The stage was won by Niccolo Bonifazio (Bahrain Merida) in a bunch sprint.
On yesterday’s stage 2 Dunne was 104th at 1:24. Victory went to Eduard Michael Grosu (Nippo - Vini Fantini), who was 3rd on the first stage and now leads overall. There are four stages remaining.
