Classy touch by Farrar for fan who gave him bike and shoes

The feel-good story of the year so far has been give a cherry on top with Tyler Farrar's classy touch for superfan Anthony Tooman.

 

Cycling is a bloody hard sport and things frequently go wrong. If the crashes and the bad weather don’t wear you down, the pain of the hard slog will!

And with pro cycling having been in crisis almost continuously for the last few decades because of drugs, this game can be a cruel mistress.

But it’s addictive and brilliant and we all love it.

And every now and then a feel good story comes out of the woodwork to remind us why cycling is so deeply embedded under our skins.

Last week we brought you news of super fan Anthony Tooman; a Kiwi who gave US sprinter Tyler Farrar his bike and shoes to finish stage 3 of the Tour Down Under.

And now Farrar has repaid the favour with a present of a replica kit as a thank you for keeping him in the race.

Tooman has gotten this very nice kit from Farrar for helping him out of a very tight spot. The superfan has also attracted a huge amount of positive media coverage all over the world; nice!

 

Tooman’s gesture has also seen him lauded online by cycling fans all over the world for his generosity.

“We could see him on the side of the road and asked ‘do you need a wheel?’ and he said ‘na, a wheel is not going to cut it’,” Tooman told The Advertiser in his native New Zealand, though the positive coverage for him has been global.

“Then it went to ‘well, what pedals are you running?’

“He was on Speedplay and I was on Shimano, and as soon as that was decided it was just ‘well you might as well just take everything’.

“Then the next question was ‘what size shoe are you?’

“He was a size 43 and I’m a 44, so we swapped shoes, he jumped on my bike, we gave him some water and seeya later.”
