Classic Irish message on show in Cavan for Irish junior at Worlds in Bergen

The GAA lads may be used to this, but not our young cyclists. It's good to see this banter and the bit of public recognition that comes with it.

He lines up in the junior road race tomorrow as part of a small but powerful Irish team at the World Championships in Bergen.

And young Luke Smith knows he has the best wishes of everyone back home carrying him along.

In rural Ireland we’re used to seeing support for the parish or county GAA team.

A local player or team headed for a big final can find their names turning up in all kinds of unusual places with messages of good luck.

But we’re less used to seeing cyclists getting the same treatment. So when we saw this effort for Luke Smith we had to share it.

Taking his lead from Fr Ted, Luke’s cousin Shane Smith – himself a very handy bike rider – has put together this presentation.

He’s encouraging the junior to “ride it like he’s late for mass” when he gets to Bergen.

Both of the lads are from Kingscourt in Co Cavan and this display is in Shane’s garden in the town.

It’s nice to see this kind of public recognition, even through jest, for riders representing their country.

Luke Smith is in action tomorrow morning in the 135.5km junior race alongside PJ Doogan and Ben Walsh.
