Lisa and Ciaran Power: They are facing into a big fight. And while they've received fantastic support so far there's a way to go. But Irish cycling can help.
Lisa and Ciaran Power get huge support but more is needed
Ciaran and Lisa Power have received spectacular support from the Irish cycling community in their bid to finance medical treatment.
Ciaran, a top international rider who raced professional for years, has established a crowd-funding page after Lisa was diagnosed with cancer.
The treatment they seek for Lisa does not come cheap; an estimated €100,000 is called for.
Obviously that is way beyond the reach of the vast majority of us on our own resources. However, with many people sharing the load the sum is achievable.
In just one day people donated a cumulative €8,000. It’s a fantastic response but there is much more to be done.

Ciaran has written an account of Lisa’s situation on the GoFundMe page, saying he has set it up for his “beautiful wife and best friend”.
Ciaran continues: “Lisa was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 at the age of 37. Our kids were 5, 7 and 9 years old at the time.
“Unfortunately, this year in January we heard the dreaded words that Lisa’s cancer had returned. It is in her spine, pelvis, ribs, shoulder, liver and adrenal gland.

“Lisa is now officially stage four. She is currently working closely with her doctors at Waterford Regional Hospital and is actively receiving treatment to control the cancer with chemotherapy and radiation.
“Lisa is researching clinical trials in the USA and is hoping to get accepted.
“We are trying to raise funds to help with Lisa’s finances for scans, alternative treatments, medical appointments.
“And hopefully if she’s accepted to a trial the funds will also be used towards this.
“Lisa is my childhood sweetheart we have been together since we are 15. She is not just my wife or mother to our beautiful kids, but also my soul mate and my best friend.
“Thanks so much for helping us raise money to help with all the expenses involved.”

Ciaran was a legend on the bike; winning the Rás twice, placing 13th at the Olympics and riding the Giro.
Much more importantly, you simply won’t meet more decent people than the Powers. Everyone in Irish cycling who knows them will say the same.
They are up against it and while people have really responded well so far; the funding drive needs to be relentless.
