A man was caught stealing €500 from a church after leaving behind his bike with his name on it.

The incident occurred in Dublin and the man had fled the scene after being interrupted.

Gardai were called and found a bike abandoned outside with the name Justin Murray on a sticker on the frame.

Murray (38), Moatview Court, Coolock, north Dublin, was tracked down and admitted his guilt.

He had cycled to the Church of Our Lady of Victories in Ballymun, north Dublin, intending to carry out a robbery.

However, when he was seen by a parishioner taking collection envelopes he fled on foot.

In the panic to get away he left his bike on the church grounds. Luckily for the gardai it had the thief’s name on it.

Murray was found because he had been in trouble with the garda repeatedly. He had 77 previous convictions, including 30 for theft or burglary crimes.

As well as his name on his bike, he was indentified using CCTV footage recorded in the church grounds.

Already in prison when he appeared before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, he was remanded in custody to appear before the court again next February.
