Team Sky’s Chris Froome has praised Nicolas Roche for his ride on stage 10 at the Vuelta today. Roche attacked on the final descent and stole 29 seconds.

Froome believes tomorrow’s final - the Velefique and Calar Alto cat 1 climbs one after the other – will take the riders into the “guts of the Vuelta”.

“I think Nico did a great ride, he seems to be in fantastic form in the Vuelta and congratulations to him," Froome said.

“He’s sitting tied second now so he’s done a really good ride. It’s a very different stage tomorrow with an uphill finish, a couple of climbs.

“So we’re going to really get into the guts of the Vuelta now.”

And Froome said as he was leading the race he simply did not want to take any chances going down the final descent today.

“(Nibali) did push a little bit on the downhill,” said Froome of Vincenzo Nibali’s attack going down the last climb.

“That's fine, that was his tactic today: make the pace in the climb and to try and make the race on the descent.

“For me, I wasn't willing to take any risks. I am in a good position in the GC. And there was a lot of roads from the bottom of the climb to the finish.

“We took it easy with my teammates and kept everything together."
