Chris Froome has made some brief remarks in the hope of “setting
straight” a story widely reported in the cycling media that stated he left a
training camp early.
However, the four-time Tour de France winner has perhaps only added to the story as he does not address the main point of the reports; that he left the camp early.
“Hope that I can set this
straight, I was last at a training camp at the beginning of December,” Froome
said.
“My recovery is going well and I
will be heading to my next training camp on Thursday. Onward.”
The story that emerged in the
cycling media in recent days stated that Froome had left a Team Ineos camp in
Spain early.
It was reported that Froome’s condition
as he returns from his crash last year was not as good as was hoped and that he
left the camp after two days as a result.
The media reports did not state when the camp had occurred. And because the coverage surfaced so soon after Christmas, the camp referred to could only have taken place last month.
However, with the pro season due to start in a matter of
weeks in Australia for some European pros and about one month later for many
others, Froome’s condition will soon become clear.
The British rider, now aged 34 years, crashed during a
recon of stage 4 TT at Critérium du Dauphiné last June.
He crashed hard as he neared the end of his recon ride in
Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes; a gust of wind catching his front wheel and sending him
into a wall at high speed.
And having been treated and examined by local medics a
right femur fracture was diagnosed. He also suffered a broken elbow and broken
ribs.
In September he was back in surgery when he sliced
tendons in his hand while using a kitchen knife at home.
In November he went under the knife again; this time to
have pins and screws removed from his elbow.
