Riders were looking forward to getting to bed, but after the Tour of Oman a bed got Matti Breschel and wiped him out
While most of the pro riders who complete the Tour of Oman on Sunday would have been looking forward to hitting their beds for some nap time, for one of the riders it was the other way around.
Danish pro riders Matti Breschel, who is a team mate of Ireland’s Nicolas Roche at Tinkoff-Saxo, was riding back to his hotel after the final stage when he was hit by a flying mattress.
While the story sounds comical, the photo above showing the extent of Breschel’s injuries shows it was anything but a laughing matter.
The mattress, presumably from a passing vehicle, flew at him at a pace and left him on his face on the road before he knew what had happened.
“After the stage, we were riding back to our hotel and on a descent when I was going 70 kilometres an hour,” he said.
“A mattress flew into my front wheel and brought the bike to a standstill. I hit the asphalt pretty hard and lost a lot of skin on my legs and face and the wound on my knee had to be stitched up.
“It’s still too early to say but I trust it doesn’t influence my preparations for the classic campaign and I’ll stick to my regular training program. I’m not concerned at this moment."
The Dane, who is planning an assault on the spring classics, is looking forward to getting over his injuries and riding Paris-Nice next month.
