Showcase Irish TT event cancelled at last minute due to crash

The Ards Cycling Club annual Champion of Champions TT that was scheduled for today – Sunday, August 11th – has been cancelled.

A road traffic crash occurred on the course early this morning and the PSNI has advised the location - Portaferry Road - will be closed for several hours.

The area was expected to be impacted by the closure until
about 11am meaning the TT organisers have had to cancel the event.

The 25 mile course is a traditional out and back with a
dead turn outside Kircubbin-Saltwater Brig.

Sign-on was due to open at 8.30am at Londonderry Park in
Newtownards, with the first rider set to get their TT underway at 9.30am.

Ards Cycling Club posted a brief statement confirming the
cancellation on social media at 8am, the earliest possible time given the road closure
information only becoming available.

In the past the event has attracted former Olympic champion
and former World Hour record holders Chris Boardman and Graeme Obree.

Chris Boardman holds the course and event record with a time of 49:36, which was set in 1993.
