Colm Cassidy of UCD CC has continued his, and his club’s, run of good form by taking the ‘Danny O’Shea Memorial Open 10 Mile TT’ in Kilpeddar, Co Wicklow today.
New National Women’s Road Race Champion Mel Spath also sent an ominous warning to her rivals for the MTB Championships in Co Wicklow tomorrow, Sunday, by taking victory today in the women’s race in a new event record.
The Sorrento CC TT is now in its eight year but has been renamed and relaunched as the Danny O’Shea Perpetual Trophy.
The club wanted to honour the memory of its founding member and have an event named after him as a tribute to the decades of loyal service Danny gave to both the club and the Irish cycling scene generally.
Danny died last October after a long illness. One of Ireland’s leading commissaires and timekeepers for many years, he was a hugely popular figure.
On a course running from just south of Kilpeddar to Coynes Cross and back, Cassidy clocked a time of 20:23, just three seconds ahead of Ryan Sherlock (Cycleways) with UCD’s Con Collis in third in a time of 20:34.
Cassidy adds that win to his victory in the Mark Hayden Memorial Road Race in Co Carlow last Sunday, when he outsprinted his breakaway companion Greg Swinand (Usher IRC), who was fourth today.
In today’s women’s event, the time of National Championships TT silver medallist Spath – at 22:37 – beat the event record of Sandra Fitzgerald from last year by 1:22.
Fitzgerald (Garda CC) was second today in a time of 23:25, with Anne Dalton of Orwell Wheelers third in 24:19.
Spath and her husband Sherlock both take on the MTB XC National Championships in Djouce tomorrow.
