Caroline Ryan left rowing for cycling, hasn't looked back since and now her and Martyn Irvine are the World No 1 riders in their events; pretty incredible.
Martyn Irvine blasted Ireland centre stage in the world of elite men's track racing earlier this year when he won the gold medal in the scratch race and the silver in the individual pursuit at the World Track Championships in Minsk.
Irvine has been hit with very bad fortune since then, with a crash and broken femur keeping him out of competition in recent months, although he did return to racing with a win at Sorrento CC's Danny O'Shea Memorial TT in Co Wicklow at the weekend.
Despite his extended lay-off, the Team Ireland rider and Unitedhealthcare road pro has shot to the stop of the UCI's rankings in both the scratch and pursuit disciplines; a fantastic achievement to go with his World title and the UCI World Cup silvers he won in Scotland late last year as part of a really consistent run since riding the 0mnium at the Olympics last year.
Similarly, Ireland's golden woman of the track Caroline Ryan has also shot to the top of the UCI rankings in the individual pursuit. The former international rower's most recent success came at home the weekend before last when she won the National Omnium Championships at Sundrive Rd track, Dublin.
But it is on the international stage that Ryan has really proven her worth in recent years, taking a bronze medal in the points race at the World Championships last year and since then been consistently in the mix at the international races she has ridden, including the highly competitive UCI World Cups.
From all at stickybottle, a big congratulations to Irvine and Ryan. It's not every day you are (literally) on top of the world, and it's not easy to get there.
