Carlos Betancur and Movistar devised a new sticky bottle on the Vuelta, just a few kilometres before the poor unfortunate face-planted the tarmac.
Carlos Betancur and Movistar new sticky bottle
When it comes to sticky bottles it’s hard to get close to Vincenzo Nibali. He went so full metal jacket in the Vuelta of two years ago he was disqualified.
He and his team bypassed any pretence of going for a bottle and he swung out of the car instead.
But just when you think something can’t be improved upon, or even given a new twist, up step Carlos Betancur and Movistar.
One of their staff was by the side of the road with just over 40km remaining on today’s Vuelta stage 6.
All hell was breaking lose at the time when the staff member handed up a bottle to Carlos Betancur. He then gave him a running-pushing-sticky bottle.
It was like a push back after a mechanical but without the mechanical; just for the craic, like.

Betancur, who won two stages of Paris Nice and the overall in 2014, would go on to crash just a few kilometres later.
Not long after his spill, he was getting another running sticky bottle (more of a straight push this time - Ed) from the roadside (below); the Movistar backroom team have clearly being training hard.
Given the horrible injuries Betancur (27) had just sustained, in the photo above, it would be hard to deny him that particular bit of assistance.
He had face-planted the tarmac and, to be fair to him, rode like a lion to even finish the stage.
Since completing today’s stage, he and his team have decided he won’t start tomorrow.
