Canyon launches new range of lighter all-disc bikes for women.
By Jessica Lamb
CANYON bikes has launched a women’s road range, uniquely with two sizes on 650b wheel.
But there is a catch; they are all running disc brakes.
At an average of 765g, the top carbon fibre model, the Ultimate WMN SLX, has a frame that is 6.5 per cent lighter than the unisex model.
This is achieved largely through thinner tubes, which it is claimed also creates a 3 per cent increase in aerodynamics.

The weight - taken from the middle size XS - makes the model Canyon’s lightest road disc brake frame.
And it is welcomed that the two smallest sizes, 2XS and 3XS, come with 650b wheels to eliminate the foot-rubbing so common on smaller frame. This is the range’s major plus.
Geometry does not differ massively from that of leading women’s brands Specialized and Liv in either the Ultimate or Endurance range.
And all bikes come with high-end components and finishing kits (Shimano, SRAM, Fizik).

They are set up for performance, also coming in two different colours.
But the catch is that all eight machines are disc brake-equipped, making them illegal to compete with in any British or Irish road or closed-circuit race.
They are perfectly legal in all Irish sportives though.
Yes, it seems obvious that disc brakes will soon not be on the "banned list", as it were. And it is key to be ahead of the game.
But there’s no hiding that, at this exact moment in time, this is an oversight.
Hopefully there is a women’s Aeroroad equivalent in the pipeline, or at least one non disc brake machine.
