Philip Lavery took the main event at the Noel & Kieran Hammond Memorial races last year, but the events for this weekend have been postponed
The Noel & Kieran Hammond Memorial races set for Co Wicklow on Sunday have been cancelled over safety concerns.
The races were planned for Roundwood, and would have catered for A1, A2, A3 and A4 riders in three separate events of 93km, 59km and 42km.
Aidan Hammond, who along with Orwell Wheelers was promoting the events, said both he and the club felt they had no choice but to postpone their plans. But he insisted the races will be run again on a new date later in the summer to be fixed soon.
“I spoke with Wicklow County Council last month to confirm everything was OK and they said everything was fine and there was no problem with race or course,” said Hammond.
“But this morning I went to mark the course and they have 1.5km of the climb all dug up to resurface it.”
Hammond said he felt he could not take the chance to let the races go ahead and said rerouting them was not a realistic option so close to the events.
“We had already submitted our safety statements to the gardai and spoke to all the residents on the course and we just won’t get this all done again in time to hold the race this weekend. It’s a real pity but we have to think of the riders and we will be going ahead again later in the summer so at least it adds a date then.”
The development is the latest in a series of race cancellations, and with the Greystones criterium that had been planned for this evening having been cancelled earlier this year it means there are no races for seniors in Leinster this coming weekend.
However, for riders from the region looking for a race to ride and not put off by a little bit or traveling, the Tralee Manor West GP is on on Sunday.
The underage races in Tralee get underway at 11:15am, while the three senior races will start at 12:15pm. The main race of the day for the Michael De Staic Cup will complete seven laps, with a final eight climb up to the finish line.
The senior racing starts at Bracker O'Regan road where the riders will be heading east, taking a left up Bullock Hill, then turning left at Tubrid, left again onto the Abbeydorney road, left again onto the Ardfert Road and finally left at the Mounthawk Roundabout back onto Bracker O'Regan Road. The finish line is at the top of Bullock Hill.
