Crash sees racing abandoned in Galway
Having been forced to postpone the Seven Springs GP earlier in the year due to adverse weather conditions, there were further problems for the promoting club yesterday.
Seven Springs CC made sure the events did not fall by the wayside for 2017 and instead secured a new slot in the calender for yesterday.
However, a major crash saw the events abandoned.
The A4 race came down to a bunch sprint and about 20 metres before the finish line a crash occurred near the head of the field.
Approximately six or eight riders at the front of the sprint were unaffected as the crash occurred behind them.
But because the spill happened in a section of the bunch that was packed tight there were a large number of fallers.
Around 10 riders crashed to the ground at speed and some of them needed to be tended to at the scene before the road was cleared.
Because the crash was so significant and absorbed the medical capacity at the event, the other A1-A2-A3 race underway was abandoned.
It was due to finish in the same place and it was decided in the interests of focussing all efforts on helping the crashed riders that no more racing should take place.
There was no update available at the time of writing on the extent of the injuries. However, Seven Springs CC released a short statement confirming what had happened.
“A day that started so well, didn't end in the way we had hoped,” the club said.
“After a large crash in the A4 race at the finish line we decided to abandon all racing for the day in the interest of rider safety.”
It added local businesses had fully supported the event as had a large number of volunteers, the Garda from the Athenry barracks and the Civil Defence.
“When the going got tough, people dropped everything and went to the aid of those who had come off worse and you all did yourselves very proud,” the club statement added.
The club concluded by wishing a speedy recovery to all of those riders injured in the sprint finish.
