Aaron Buggle has crashed out of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Australia and has been forced to undergo surgery for an elbow injury.
Following that procedure it appears fears Buggle had chipped a bone were unfounded. He suffered severe internal bruising and ripped tendons.
The 22-year-old was riding his first stage race for his new Rapha Condor JLT team when he came down on stage 2 today, a 146.6km run from Mitchelton Winery to Healesville. He appears to have come off after hitting a traffic cone at speed.
The stage was won by Luke Davison (SASI), with yesterday’s stage winner Aaron Donnelly (Huon-Genesys) holding onto the yellow jersey ahead of tomorrow’s final stage.
Buggle’s team is in Australia for an extended racing and training trip before the European season starts. It’s unclear if he will remain with the team there or come home as early as possible.
His team mate and fellow Irish international, Felix English is also with the team in Australia. He is not in action on the Herald Sun Tour but will be deployed in other races as part of a rider roster rotation system.
