Brown and Shaw on their way to 4th fastest in this afternoon’s pursuit qualifiers
The Irish Paralympic cyclists have gotten their London 2012 campaign off to a very strong start on the first day of competition today, with James Brown and Damien Shaw setting a new national record in the individual pursuit B to book their place in the ride-off for bronze.
Their time of 4:25.557 was fourth fastest in the qualifiers.
They will now go on to fight it out for that bronze medal against Spain in the London velodrome at 4.57pm today.
The duo were tipped to take a medal in London, having taken silver at the World Championships in LA back in February. On that occasion they set a new national record of 4:26.778 in the qualifiers to get into a gold medal ride off with Australia.
Today’s performance by Brown and Shaw was more than a second faster but with all of the nations competing really raising their game for these Paralympics, the Irish time was bested today by their bronze medal rivals Spain and also by two tandems from Australia, who now go head to head in the final.
The Irish pair’s time was almost a full second slower than Spain – who clocked 4:24.539 – so they will most likely need to really pull a big ride out of the bag and lower that new national record further if they are to take a medal home.
