Brother of former top rider Mehall Fitzgerald sadly killed in road crash

Mehall Fitzgerald on his return to the Rás in 2013 when he took three county rider prizes despite having been away from racing for many years. His younger brother Scott has sadly lost his life in a road traffic accident.

 

Well known in the Irish cycling community as a very popular and successful road rider, Mehall Fitzgerald is today mourning the very sad death of his brother Scott.

The young Clonmel man lost his life in a motorbike crash at the weekend when his bike hit a wall.

He was driving on a stretch of road between Barna and Old Pallas in East Limerick when the fatal crash occurred at about 3.30pm on Sunday.

An air ambulance landed at a nearby GAA pitch in the hope Scott could be taken to hospital for treatment but he very sadly died from his injuries.

He was a motorcycle enthusiast and member of the Unfixables Motorcycle Club.

His remains will be reposing at O’Donoghue’s Funeral Home on Kickham St in his native Clonmel this evening, Tuesday, from 5pm.

Removal will take place at 8pm to St Mary’s Church, Irishtown. And requiem mass takes place at 12 noon tomorrow, Wednesday, with burial immediately afterwards at St Patrick’s Cemetery.

Mehall is a former multi Rás stage winner and elite national road race champion.

He rode as an international rider for many years and won a huge number of races at home and abroad.

He made a return to racing in 2012 after a long break and won several races. He then rode the Rás the following year with VisitNenagh.ie and has also ridden in the colours of Clonmel CC.
