Italian rider Fabio Felline has been diagnosed with some very nasty injuries after his mishap in the neutralised zone at Amstel Gold on Sunday.

The Trek-Segafredo rider seemed to reach his left hand towards his front wheel when it got caught in the spokes and threw him over the handlebars.

Even though the racing proper had not begun, the riders were moving out at a decent enough speed and so he planted the ground head first with some force.

He was forced to abandon and was taken to the hospital for treatment, with his team confirming the extent of his injuries in a post race statement.

"Fabio crashed with his face directly into the ground," said team doctor Jens Hinder.

"He sustained a broken nose and cuts to his face and the radiologists also found a fracture at the base of the skull.

"He needs further examination to determine if it is stable or unstable and this will determine what treatment is required for recovery.

"It is too early to know until he undergoes further tests."

Felline took to Twitter after the race saying: "Not a good day but shit happens. Now I need some recovery but I'll be back! Thank you for all your messagge and support."
