British Cycling is nominated for a major award; Twitter is not happy...

British Cycling has had a very rough year and is still mired in controversy. But that hasn't stopped it being nominated for a major award.

Their cyclists may have once again cleaned up on the pro road scene and dominated on the track at the Olympics, but 2016 was definitely a year British Cycling will want to forget.

But despite all of the controversy, the federation has been shortlisted for the Sports Industry Awards’ Governing Body of the Year award.

British Cycling endured a serious controversy around sexism and alleged derogatory comments about paracyclists, with its technical director Shane Sutton departing as a result.

Bradley Wiggins had his TUE details linked sparking accusations that he took medicines, though legal and sanctioned by the relevant authorities, that would have made him lighter and stronger before key Grand Tour events.

And the end of the year came and went with an inquiry continuing into the delivery of a jiffy bag to the team in 2011 still continuing, with nobody within Team Sky or British Cycling able to provide records proving a decongestant was in the bag.

And like the controversial Wiggins TUEs, the jiffy bag incident occurred while Team Sky and British Cycling were essentially the same entity.

As one can imagine, some people have been having a field day on Twitter, responding with incredulity to the fact the Sports Industry Awards would shortlist British Cycling for an award at this time.
