For all your kit needs, Irish company VeloRevolution is Brexit-proof - quality delivered quickly and hassle-free
A Brexit deal may have been reached between Britain and the European Union just before Christmas but that has not prevented some worrying developments in the cycling industry.
Brands such as Canyon, Campagnolo and even Britain’s Brooks saddles have either stopped delivering to Britain or stopped selling directly to British customers.
Some of those issues will likely be resolved in time but a number of stickybottle readers have contacted us to report several sites appear to be no longer delivering to the Republic of Ireland, apparently as a result of Brexit.
Readers have reported issues while trying to make
purchases on sites like bike-discount.de, bike-components.de, bike24.com and Mantel Cycling.
A number of readers have expressed
concern that while these sites are Continental European businesses some of
these sites may fill orders in Britain for delivery to customers in the UK and
Republic of Ireland and that Brexit may mean that way of doing business is no
longer possible.
Stickybottle has contacted these businesses and while not all had commented at the time of writing, some had.
And the news seems to be good for
cyclists in Ireland who want to keep ordering from these sites in the
post-Brexit period.
Mantel Cycling – a Dutch based
company selling road and MTB bikes and full range of kit and components – has confirmed
orders to British and Irish customers had been interrupted.
However, it said this has resulted
from United Parcel Service (UPS) – which owns Parcel Motel - temporarily
cancelling its deliveries in and out of the UK and Ireland.
“UPS has now resumed its services.
We expect to be able to take orders again shortly,” Mantel Cycling has said of
the suspension of service amid the period of uncertainty just before the Brexit
deadline was reached.
Bike-Components also said its
services were interrupted by Brexit and the closure of the Channel Tunnel –
aimed at combating the spread of the new variant of Covid-19. However, these
were temporary issues that would be resolved soon, the company said.
“Unfortunately,
with Brexit and the temporary closure of the tunnel, there was a backlog
of orders that could no longer be delivered. Unfortunately, these had to be
worked on first,” it said.
Bike-Components also said it would
recommence deliveries to Ireland “in the next few days” when all orders could
be filled once again as normal.
We’ll add replies from the other
companies if and when we get them. However, it appears some of these sites have
been impacted by delivery companies pausing their deliveries to Ireland and
Britain in the last week of 2020.
Those interruptions to services
occurred amid the uncertainty around Brexit and what rules – mainly taxes and
duties - applied to deliveries and customers just after Brexit.
