The Tour of Britain organisers have taken the decision to cancel the remainder of the race following the death today of Queen Elizabeth II. The race was due to take in the 170.9km stage 6 from Tewkesbury to Gloucester tomorrow, which was confirmed as cancelled in a statement on Thursday evening.
Following the announcement of that decision, a further statement was made by the organisers in the following hours confirming the final two stages on Saturday and Sunday are also off. It means the race is now over.
The final general classification and other overall results will now be based on the results at the end of today's stage 5. That means Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) is the outright winner of the 2022 edition with Irish rider Matthew Teggart (WiV-SunGod) winning the sprints classification.
The decision to cancel tomorrow's stage was in keeping with other sports in Britain, with all soccer fixtures cancelled in England and Scotland. Tonight's Carabao Cup game between Manchester United and West Ham went ahead as canceling at short notice was not possible. Other sports such as athletics, cricket, horse racing, golf and rugby have also postponed or cancelled fixtures.
However, with 10 days of mourning - until the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II - now beginning in Britain, event cancellations are expected to become more widespread than those initial decisions announced on Thursday.
