Pat McQuaid has been beaten in the UCI election where he was trying to get a third term in office
Irishman Pat McQuaid's tenure as UCI president has just come to a close after he was beaten in the election for a third term of office his only challenger Brian Cookson.
The new president, Cookson was the winner by 24 votes to 18; not quite the majority he had expected.
McQuaid, who has been in the post for two four-year terms, extended his congratulations to Cookson.
"Being elected UCI president was one of the proudest moments in my life and I know that it is also a proud occasion for Brian, his family and his supporters," said the Irishman.
“It has been a huge privilege to serve the sport that I love as UCI President for eight years and I enjoyed every day that I spent working with all of our federations to improve and develop cycling worldwide.
“Brian has set out what he intends to achieve over the next four years and I would encourage all cycling federations to support his efforts to work for the good of the sport.”
Cookson said he was very pleased to have won and was looking forward to tackling the challenges that lay ahead.
"It's a huge honour to be voted president. The real work starts now. I call on the global community to unite so that the sport lives up to its potential."
"We must have a new style of government and a collegiate system. My first act as president is to ensure anti-doping is fully independent and to sit down with WADA."
"It is a huge honour to have been elected president of the UCI by my peers and I would like to thank them for the trust they have placed in me today."
"The campaign to get to this point has been intense but I am under no illusion that the real work starts now. So I call on the global cycling community to unite and come together to help ensure that our great sport realises its enormous potential. This is the vision that will drive and focus my activities over the next four years."
“I have said throughout my campaign that we must embrace a new style of governance and a collegiate way of working so that a new era of growth and commercial success for the UCI and our sport can begin."
