An appeal by Matt Brammeier to his exclusion from the Ireland team for the London Olympics has failed to force any change.
Stickybottle understands that the original team announced last week is the one that will travel to London. It consists of Dan Martin (Garmin Barracuda), Nicolas Roche (Ag2r) and David McCann (RTS Racing).
Sam Bennett (An Post-Sean Kelly) remains the reserve rider, though he will not travel to London unless one of the selected trio is unable to go; he will not travel with the party in the event he is needed as a last minute stand-in.
It has also been confirmed that McCann has been nominated to rider the TT and will take Ireland’s sole place in that event just days after the road race in London.
It will be McCann’s third Olympics, Roche’s second and Martin’s first.
Brammeier, the national road race and TT champion and a member of the Omega Pharma-Quickstep team, had last week lodged an appeal to his omission from the team.
While that appeal was considered by an appeals committee and the original three-man selection committee was then reconvened, no changes have been made to the team.
In the Cycling Ireland Olympic qualification criteria, the appeals process was clearly set out. It states that the three-man selection panel is only to be reconvened in the event that an appeal is upheld.
It is unclear if the Brammeier appeal was in some way upheld and the selection process was revisited as a result but the same team was selected anyway after that re-examination.
Stickybottle was unable to clarify that matter at the time of publishing and we wanted to bring you main news element immediately relating to the team being unchanged. We’ll have more later.
