Bradley Wiggins signs up to ride major Irish summer sportive

Bradley Wiggins will ride one of Ireland's most scenic sportives this summer. However, while demand will be high places are being strictly capped so getting your name down now is advised.

Bradley Wiggins is set to ride the Tour de Burren sportive in Co Clare in June the organisers have said.

The 2012 Tour de France winner has never appeared at a sportive in Ireland though he has raced in the country.

“I look forward to riding in my first sportive on the west coast of Ireland,” Wiggins said in a statement issued by the event organisers.

“Ireland has a great cycling history and I am excited to meet and ride alongside Irish cycling fans on what will be a great day in the saddle.”

Burren Cycling Club chairperson, Kevin Hanrahan, said Wiggins had opted to ride the event because of the beauty of the region, and a few other perks.

“(He) has selected the Tour de Burren because of the stunning Burren scenery and our shared ethos of inclusive participative cycling,” he said.

“The famous Tour de Burren cheesecake is also known to be on Sir Brad’s wish list,” Hanrahan joked.

The sportive event, on Saturday, June 22nd, is based out of the small harbour village of Ballyvaughan.

The thousands of cyclists from across Ireland and further afield will get acquainted with the unique landscape of the Burren National Park.

As well as the Burren landscape, the route is also along the Wild Atlantic Way.

And while the Co Clare scenery and coastline have always drawn cyclists to the  Tour de Burren, Bradley Wiggins looks set to be a big draw this year.

“The Burren Cycling Club, organisers of the Tour de Burren, are honoured and excited that Sir Wiggins has chosen the Tour de Burren as his inaugural Irish event to cycle,” the club said in a statement.

“Nearly 2,000 cyclists will join Sir Bradley Wiggins on Saturday, June 22nd, on a choice of routes through and around the stunning and unique landscape of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark.

“There will be a route to suit everyone’s ability from 60km, 110km to 150km. Sir Bradley Wiggins and the Burren Cycling Club encourage cycling by the young and young of heart.”

Wiggins will also join the cyclists on the Tour de Burren family spin; a 14km loop around Ballyvaughan village.

The ‘Family Spin’ will take place at 11am on Saturday June 22nd and registration will open from 9am in Ballyvaughan.

Entry is limited to 2,000 cyclists anyone hoping to ride with Sir Bradley Wiggins can get in by registering at this link.
