Eurosport has been very good to Sam Bennett in recent years, and especially over the last few days as his success has gone into overdrive on the Tour de France.
The mostly British presenters on the channel have seemed genuinely pleased that Bennett is doing so well on the race, with a podcast last night featuring Bradley Wiggins and fellow former professional rider Brian Smith proving very complimentary to the Irish cyclist.
However, an appearance on the Breakaway panel discussion, above, featuring Wiggins and our own Sean Kelly got a bit weird to say the least.
Wiggins, bizarrely, told Kelly that when it came to Bennett "we could almost consider him British". How he came to that conclusion is anyone's guess.
Wiggins then made a quip - probably intended to be funny, to be fair to him - that at least people could understand Bennett when he spoke, unlike Kelly.
Sean Kelly could do little but sit there and grin. Wiggins has, of course, been full of praise and admiration for Kelly in the past, describing him as "a proper working class hero" and one of the greats of the sport.
They both have a good rapport and Wiggins is known for his, at times, slightly unusual humour so let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
However, the remarks by Wiggins were very strange and have raised more than a few eyebrows among Irish cycling fans celebrating the fact Bennett has taken his first stage win on the Tour and has strengthened his hold on the green jersey.
