Cyclists’ voices have grown louder in recent years in highlighting
the dangers of close passes and parking on cycle lanes, yet both are still a
real problem.
The series of tweets below by one Dublin-based father
cycling to school with his son reveal the litany of dangers on the roads.
In the first video there’s a worrying moment when boy
gets only a tiny bit of space on the road between a parked van on his left and
a passing bus to his right.
The van is left parked by a driver in the cycle lane, forcing the boy out into the road just as the bus passes him.
The child kept his cool and kept going but these kinds of encounters are far too close for comfort.
In the other content below the everyday obstacles that cyclists in Ireland face are captured; inconsiderate parking by drivers a real problem.
Indeed the dad who shot these clips made the point that inconsiderate parking by drivers was worse closer to the school as parents wanted to drop their kids off as near to the school gates as they could.
Any cyclist who commutes in Dublin in particular will
also be familiar with drivers going through red lights; three drivers going
through the same solid red light in one of these clips.
@dublincycling thread /1 I've had the opportunity to cycle to school with the kids a few times over the last couple of weeks. Everyday, there's some other inconsiderate motorist, endangering lives. I think we can all agree this constitutes a close pass by the @dublinbusnews .... pic.twitter.com/e7FNSQT1S4

/2 & what makes it worse, the driver had full view of the van parked in the cycle lane at the other side of the junction (and of the other cyclists just ahead of us moving out to avoid it). As for the van driver, that parking is ridiculous. Camera angle to bad to get company logo pic.twitter.com/ZCIoEBIlyI

/3 and the van driver is not the only only one doing this. It's worse nearer the schools with pick ups & parents being too lazy to park appropriately. Apologies for bad angle on video, but you get the gist pic.twitter.com/nfu9pUlCiQ

/5 And as for the suggestion that cyclists are the ones breaking red lights..... Three cars do it here at a pedestrian crossing. Kids have loved cycling, and want to do it more. But I can't do it often with them, and I couldn't let them go alone in these conditions. Such a shame. pic.twitter.com/jW2S4ZVuWx
