Boy (16) arrested over hit and run killing of cyclist in Dublin crash

Thiago Cortes was killed in Dublin's north inner city in August when he was hit by a driver in a car before the driver fled the scene

A teenager has been arrested by gardai as part of the criminal inquiry into the killing of a cyclist in Dublin in August.

The teenager, aged 16 years, was arrested in the city on Friday morning and was being questioned about the death of 28-year-old Thiago Cortes in the north inner city on the night of Monday, August 30th.

Gardai said the boy had been “detained in Store Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act”.

Thiago Cortes was from Rio in Brazil and was working as a
Deliveroo cyclist delivering food to people in Dublin.

Gardai began a criminal investigation into his death
after the driver hit Mr Cortes, fatally injuring him, before driving away.

The hit and run occurred at 10:30pm on North Wall Quay, with Mr Cortes taken from the scene by ambulance to the Mater Hospital where he died two days later.

“A car understood to have been involved in the incident was recovered at Castleforbes Square a short time later by Gardaí. No arrests have been made to date and enquires are ongoing,” a Garda statement said of the crash at the time.

Gardaí are still appealing for witnesses and anyone who was in the area of North Wall Quay, North Wall Avenue, East Wall Road, Sheriff Street Upper, Castleforbes Road or Castleforbes Square between 10.15pm and 10.30pm on Monday, August 30th, to contact them.

Gardai are also appealing to road users with camera
footage, including dash-cam, from the area at the time to make it available to
