Fiery Nacer Bouhanni did nothing to enhance his reputation at the weekend when, after being refused entry to a jewellery store near his home he became very irate. According to the saleswoman in the shop in Nancy, the Cofidis man became increasingly agitated and began shouting “You do not know who I am! I'm a Nancy millionaire”
Nacer Bouhanni can barely go a week without being in the headlines these days – and it’s not always bike-related, as this story outlines.
The former French road race champion is in flying form at the moment and amongst his wins already this year are two stages at the Volta A Catalunya and another at Paris Nice.
He was also fourth in Milan-San Remo and third in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.
On the flipside, however, was his relegation on stage 2 of Paris-Nice where he was adjudged to have sprinted dangerously, putting other riders at risk in the gallop.
He would win a couple of days later into Romans-Sur-Isere and afterwards he snapped: “This time there’s no controversy, I won.”
The fiery Frenchman very much lost it at the weekend when he was prevented from entering a jewellery store in Nancy because he wouldn’t remove his hat.
The store manager didn’t know who Bouhanni was and try as he might, the Cofidis man could not gain access.
“Once in the hall, I wanted to see if there were other watches inside,” Bouhanni told a local newspaper.
“A saleswoman replied curtly that they were all on display outside so I came outside,” he added.
Having looked in the display window and picked out a watch he liked, he was not granted re-entry because he wouldn’t take off his hat.
The saleswoman argued that security had been heightened in recent weeks after a robbery and she wasn’t prepared to let Bouhanni in, so the latter lost the plot.
It has been reported that Bouhanni became increasingly agitated and began thumping the glass door and shouting: “You do not know who I am! I'm a Nancy millionaire.”
Bouhanni took to Facebook to post an apology from the shop and his reply to that apology.
He insists he never said he was "a Nancy millionaire", adding while he knocked on the door attempting to get back into the store he did not bang on it, as he said had been reported.
