Sam Bennett’s Bora-hansgrohe unveils team for Tour de France 2019

Sam Bennett will not ride the Tour de France but Irish cycling fans will hope to see him in the Vuelta towards the end of the season

Sam Bennett has not been named in the Bora-hansgrohe team for the Tour de France starting next weekend.

While the Irishman would be a hot favourite for a stage
win, his presence in the team was not expected.

Instead, Peter Sagan (29) will be the protected rider for the stages that would have suited Bennett.

Looking ahead, Sam Bennett may be included in the line-up for the Vuelta.

In the team with Sagan for the Tour are: Daniel Oss,
Lukas Postlberger, Max Schachmann, Emmanuel Buchmann, Marcus Burghardt, Patrick
Konrad and Gregor Muhlberger.

Sagan will be targeting the points classification, which he has already won six times during his career.

Sagan will be aiming for a seventh green jersey at the Tour de France next month

The team is a very strong one; no surprise considering Bora-hansgrohe has been one of the most successful teams in the world this year.

Sam Bennett claimed three stages at the Giro last year
and through he was not picked this year, Pascal Ackermann stepped up and won
two stages as well as the points classification.

Further proof that the team does not all revolved around
Sagan has been Bennett’s success this year; eight wins to date and more
expected.

In Emmanuel Buchmann and Patrick Konrad Bora-hansgrohe
also has two men in its Tour line-up that can target the Tour general
classification.

Buchmann (26) was 3rd overall at the recent Critérium du
Dauphiné (2.UWT), took 7th overall at the Tour de Romandie, was 3rd at Itzulia
Basque Country (2.UWT) and claimed 4th at UAE Tour.

Konrad (27) was 3rd overall at Tour de Suisse this year and was 7th overall in last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Though Sam Bennett (28) was not expected to be in the Tour team, confirmation he is not riding will still come as a disappointment to Irish fans.

However, if he were to be selected for the Vuelta, it is a race he could win several stages on if his form was good.
