Bora-hansgrohe has moved to clarify reports that its
German sprinter Pascal Ackermann had fractured his arm in racing action today.
It said while Ackermann, the team’s sprinter for the Giro
ahead of Sam Bennett, had crashed he had not suffered any broken bones.
The 25-year-old was riding the opening stage of the Tour
of the Alps today when he crashed and was forced out of the race.
He was taken off to hospital for checks. However, before
the team offered any updates on his condition, the race’s social media account
personnel gave their own update.
They said they believed Ackermann had suffered a fractured arm in the crash. However, the team quickly moved to clarify, saying a medical examination had shown no fractures.
While nobody would want Ackermann to miss out on a Giro d’Italia ride because of a crash, Irish cycling fans will eagerly await further updates on his condition.
The team has selected him for the Giro ahead of Sam
Bennett despite the Irish rider’s three victories at the Italian Grand Tour
last year.
And though Bennett has been notching up win after win of
late, adding two more at the Tour of Turkey last week, there are no plans to
change the Giro team line-up.
For his part, Sam Bennett said last week he had already
commented on not being picked for the Giro.
He added he had to respect the team’s selection decision
and had nothing more to add.
Instead, he was focused on performing in the races he was
selected for, rather than commenting on the races he would not be riding.
