When climbing gave way to descending after the penultimate climb at Milan-Sanremo, Niccolo' Bonifazio let rip with a hair-raising descending attack.
Niccolo' Bonifazio has revealed he hit speeds of up to 85km per hour while on the attack descending at Saturday's Milan-Sanremo.
The Direct Energie rider attacked hard going down the Cipressa; a route he knows well as he is from the region and has trained up and down the climbs hundreds of times.
His attack was impressive and he pulled out a decent gap. However, he was recaptured as the race hit the Poggio. And in the end he paid the price; finishing 131st at 6:31.
But it was spectacular while it lasted. And the 25-year-old Italian appeared to enjoy his time off the front, however brief.
"The team would have saved me for the Poggio but I felt empty at the start of the Cipressa,” he said.
“I knew I wouldn't have stayed with the best. So I decided to go for it on the descent. I was hoping someone like Daniel Oss would come with me.
"I'd always dreamed about attacking on the descent of the Cipressa or Poggio at Milan-San Remo.
“It's 10km from my home; 20 minutes of warm-up and then I'm there. It's my gym, my office. I'm there every day. Well, it was, now I live on Monte Carlo."
