Damien Shaw will play no part in this week’s European Track Championships as the collar bone he broke in the summer has not healed sufficiently for him to take part.
The Team ASEA man had been training in Majorca with the national track squad for the last number of weeks with a view to having him ready for this week’s key campaign in Switzerland.
However, he is not yet deemed sufficiently fit to take his place in the team and instead, he has returned home to Westmeath.
It’s not yet known when he will return to action, though at this stage it’s most likely we won’t see him in action until the opening round of the UCI Track World Cup in Cali later in the month.
It’s a big blow to Shaw that he wasn’t able to show what he can do in both the individual events and the endurance ones this week.
He is viewed as the successor to Ryan Mullen who departed the national setup to pursue a road career with WorldTour team Garmin-Cannondale.
In Shaw’s absence, the four-man team pursuit squad will be picked from Martyn Irvine, Fintan Ryan, Felix English, Marc Potts and Mark Downey.
Shaw hasn’t ruled out the possibility of requiring more surgery on the collar bone, should it not be corrected fully in a few weeks' time.
He broke it while training in Majorca less than a week after winning the national road race championships in late June.
