Blow for Rás Mumhan as Team Wiggins backs out of Irish event

Team WIGGINS looked set to be coming to Ireland for the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend but a last-minute invite elsewhere has seen them opt for that instead.

Following the news that top UK Continental squad Team Wiggins would be coming to Kerry Group Rás Mumhan in a little over a month, stickybottle can now confirm they have decided to withdraw their entry.

Though the exact details are unclear, informed sources have confirmed they received another offer of a more convenient “last-minute” race elsewhere.

It will come as a blow to the race organisers who were looking forward to elevating the profile of the race even further.

The team had been in contact with the race organisers for a period and had gone as far as putting in place support staff for the Irish event.

However, the absence of Team Wiggins not only opens the door for another team but will probably come as a big relief to some of the home-based men.

Team WIGGINS would be viewed as one of the strongest Continental teams in the UK and would have been expected to dominate the race, or at least push for each of the four stages.

Not since Russell Downing won the race outright in 2004 has a British rider went home with the yellow jersey – though there is expected to be a strong contingent from the UK once again.

Irish international Michael O’Loughlin is a member of the squad but it’s unlikely he’d have been selected on the team anyway, given the Easter showpiece clashes with an U23 Nations Cup event in Belgium that weekend.

The Carrick man is likely to be in the shake-up for selection there, though the squad for that is weeks away from being finalised.

We’ll be in a position to name some of the teams coming to Kerry very soon.
