Blarney CC step in to rescue National Criterium Championships; entries now open

Felix English took the National Criterium Championships in Mullingar last year and has been in the form of his life on the UK criterium scene in recent months. This year's championship has been rescheduled and entries for the new race are now open.

Entries are now open for the rescheduled National Criterium Championships, due to be held just outside the centre of Cork City  on Saturday, August 24th.

The Championships looked to be going by the wayside for 2013 after Cork County  CC failed to secure enough entries before the closing date to justify running it. But Blarney CC have stepped in and are hopeful the same problem won’t happen again.

The new route is a looped circuit of 1.3 kilometres – fully closed - and will provide ample viewing for spectators while also providing thrilling racing for competitors.

The circuit – on the Mardyke Walk and Western Road - is a busy area so there are time restrictions related to the road closures which means riders should arrive early if they want to avail of a few warm up laps on the circuit before the event.

The event starts at 5pm sharp and sign-on will be from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at the Mardyke Pavilion (UCC Rugby Pavilion). See map on the Blarney CC website for exact location.

The race will be 50 minutes plus three laps, so all should be done and dusted within the hour.

The Championships will be run in association with the World Mini Games (www.worldminigames2013.com) so an even bigger attendance, with sportspeople gathering from a wide range of sporting backgrounds , is expected.

The Mardyke area itself is blessed with good transport networks into and out of the city while there's also an array of bars, restaurants and coffee shops in the area. The city centre is no more than a 10-minute walk.

Online entry (€20) is available at http://www.blarneycyclingclub.ie/2013/08/09/national-crit-championships-2013/ and entries close on Tuesday August 20th.
