Safety features built into road caused Bjorg Lambrecht fatal crash

Bjorg Lambrecht had already won silver at the U23 Worlds and was riding very well with Lotto-Soudal

An investigation in Poland has found safety reflectors sunk into the road caused the crash that cost Bjorg Lambrecht his life.

The Belgian rider, aged 22 years and a rising star of pro
cycling, crashed and died just over three weeks ago.

He was pronounced dead in hospital after a crash during
the 150.5km stage 3 at the Tour de Pologne from Chorzów to Zabrze.

Lotto-Soudal said because he had suffered a major liver
laceration, he would have needed a miracle to survive.

The young rider crashed into a concrete roadside culvert
which was embedded in a grass verge; effectively a large concrete pipe partially
embedded in the earth.

While those details were known within days, it is the
cause of the crash that public prosecutors in Poland have now been commenting
on.

"UAE Emirates riders close behind him saw him
driving over a reflector that had been incorporated in the road surface," Malwina
Szendzelorz-Pawela, a public prosecutor, is reported as saying in the Polish media.

"As a result, he lost control of his bike, suddenly
turning to the right and then to the left.”

When Lambrecht went to his left, he went the road at
speed and hit that section of the concrete structure above the ground on the
roadside.

The reflectors said to have cause Lambrecht to lose
control of his bike are placed on the road to mark out the sides of the roads
to aid drivers in the dark or while driving in poor conditions.
