Bjorg Lambrecht looked like he was on his way to becoming one of the new stars of pro cycling but sadly he has died after a crash at the Tour de Pologne today

Bjorg Lambrecht, the 22-year-old Belgian rider who looked destined for a glorious career, has died after a crash at the Tour de Pologne.

Early indications while the stage continued were that he had been revived and was being taken to hospital for treatment.

However, his Lotto-Soudal team has now confirmed his sad passing, describing it as "the biggest tragedy possible that could happen".

The fatal crash occurred almost two
thirds of the way into stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne, some 150.5km from Chorzów
to Zabrze.

Lambrecht crashed into a concrete
culvert and while he was resuscitated roadside and taken to hospital he did not
survive surgery.

In his second year at WorldTour level, Lambrecht was a flyweight climber who had already made a big impression.
