A bike parade will take place in Dublin on Wednesday, June 26th, to mark the start of the Velo-City 2019 international cycling conference in the city.
Conference delegates will set out on
their bike ride on Wednesday from the National Convention Centre on the north
quays in the city centre.
They will ride along a section of the
Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) cycle route, a UNESCO designated biosphere in the
heart of Dublin.
However, anyone can join them at the
Sails Sculpture, a piece of artwork situated on the seafront where Clontarf Rd
meets Alfie Byrne Rd. The public meet up is 3.30pm and all are welcome.
Joining the event there means you don’t
have to go into the city centre, which may be especially convenient if you have
young children with you.
From that location on the coast at
Clontarf, everyone will form a Bike Parade and ride along the seafront, via the
segregated two-way cycleway, to St Anne’s Park about 1½ miles away.
The 98FM Thunder Bus will be in the park
to entertain the crowd. There will also be a wide range of participation
activities such as music, cricket, yoga, athletics, ultimate frisbee and cargo
bike trails.
The event in St Anne’s will also feature
mountain bike and BMX courses, Gaelic football and hurling-camogie
demonstrations.
There will also be an arena show to
enjoy; Ultimate Extreme Battle. It involves a contest between an MTB stunt
rider going up against a BMX stunt rider and freerunner.
And while you’re enjoying that unusual
show and the other activities there will also be hot and cold food served.
Newly elected Lord Mayor of Dublin Paul
Mc Auliffe said he was looking forward to welcoming the international Velo-City
delegates to the city.
“I hope that while they are here they
will have the opportunity to experience all our wonderfully friendly and
vibrant city has to offer,” he said.
“I’m sure that the one of their
highlights will be taking part in the Bike Parade as it will allow them to
enjoy unparalleled views of Dublin Bay.”
Velo-city 2019 - Cycling for the Ages takes
place in the Convention Centre Dublin from June 25th to 28th.
