Dublin-based cyclists offered bike storage units outside homes for €100

Bike bunkers are being offered to Dublin based cyclists so they can store their bikes securely on the street outside their homes

Dublin-based cyclists can now avail of on-street bike
storage units where they can store their bike securely as an alternative to
bringing them into their house.

The new Bike Bunkers are being offered for €100 per year
under a scheme being run by Dublin City Council.

While the storage units have been trialled on some Dublin
streets in recent years, the council-run project is now moving to the next
stage.

And that means people living in Dublin city who want a
bike bunker outside their house can now apply to get one.

Storage units of various sizes will be available, each
with room to store between four and eight bikes.

They will be shared by residents, meaning a bike bunker
installed on a street in Dublin can be used by a number of people from that
area.

Each user will be registered by Dublin City Council and
given a key for the unit, allowing them access to their bike inside the locked
unit any time they want.

It is intended that the bike bunkers would take the place
of a car parking spot on most streets.

The units, which have been in use in the UK and
Netherlands for years, will be especially suitable in areas where houses have
no gardens.

They are intended as an alternative to cyclists storing
bikes in their house or small back yards and as an alternative to residents
locking their bikes outside their homes.

Anyone interested should register that interest on BikeBunkers.ie. Council staff will review the expressions of interest monthly.

New units will be issued to those locations that feature
in a number of expressions of interest.
