Dublin City Council has begun installing new bike bunker
hangars on the streets of the capital for cyclists to securely store their
bikes.
While they had previously been trialed in Dublin 8, the
hangars are now set to become a permanent fixture as the project proper is now
finally up and running.
The first two hangars, of an initial phase of 10 units,
were installed yesterday on Donore Road off South Circular Road, Dublin 8.
Eight more hangars are set to be installed in the New
Year, with three different designs to be used.
You can request a Bike Bunker on your street, or give feedback on the first bunkers being installed, at the project’s dedicated website.
The installation of the new units is part of the
council’s Beta Projects concept; essentially a plan to make small changes to
public spaces in Dublin for the better.
Most of the new Bike Bunker hangars can hold six bikes at
a time in the secure on-street units.
The hangars each take up one car parking space and are
being placed by the side of the road, taking the place of on-street vehicle
parking.
The keys for the units – which are cemented into the
roadside – are only given to paying customers, with several households sharing
the bunkers.
In residential areas they are seen as ideal for those who
live in houses and apartments with no room inside to store bikes.
Many properties also have no front or back gardens or yards, meaning those who cycle must resort to locking their bikes up outside.
The map below outlines the area that Dublin City Council is willing to locate the units in.
