Some of the big name riders at the Giro d'Italia were among the crash victims today. Furthermore, Miguel Ángel López (Astana Qazaqstan) was forced out of the race. However, the Colombian was not a crash victim and was instead suffering from a persistent hip injury.
Simon Yates (BikeExchange Jayco), who won the stage 2 TT, came down and then caused more concern when he had to go back to the race doctor's car for some treatment. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was also among the riders impacted by the Yates crash, which occurred on the left side of a very narrow street just after the start of the stage.
Following that crash involving Yates and Valverde, a race motorbike was involved in a crash with a number of riders. That incident, with about 160km to go, saw Roger Klugge (Lotto Soudal) being knocked to the tarmac with some force.
Klugge, remarkably, got back up and onto his bike and was soon back in the race. Two Bardiani-CSF riders needed new bikes after the ones they started the stage on were smashed up in the motorbike-related crash.
With 31km to go 19-year-old Ukrainian champion Andrii Ponomar (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli) and Ben Zwiehoff (Bora-hansgrohe) also crashed on a grass verge by the roadside, though they were able to continue and that incident seemed to be limited to those two riders.
