Big day in Kerry as two new greenways finally reach construction phase

Minister of State Brendan Griffin turning the sod on the north Kerry greenway yesterday

The Tralee to Fenit and Kilmorna to
Listowel greenways in Co Kerry have both reached a significant milestone with
sod turnings performed by Minister for State Brendan Griffin TD.

The ceremonies mark an important juncture
for both projects, though they will take a considerable period to fully
construct; between 18 months and two years.

When they are finalised they will form
part of a 100km cycling and walking route from Limerick to Fenit, Co Kerry,
passing through Listowel and Tralee.

They are receiving some €6.5 million in
funding from the Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional
Greenways.

That money is effectively being topped
up by €1.2 million generated by an increase in local property tax.

The Tralee-Fenit greenway will be 10km
in length and is the start of the southern end of Great Southern Greenway.

The Kilmorna-Listowel greenway will
stretch for 10.5km and is an extension of Great Southern Greenway westwards
into Kerry and towards the sea.

When the Kilmorna-Listowel is opened it
will become part of a 50km stretch of Great Southern Greenway.

There is much work to be done to turn this into a greenway, but the project is now underway
