Cycling Ireland and Sport Ireland have said the strong response of fans - both Irish and international - to last year's UCI Cyclocross World Cup round in Dublin proved the demand for such racing in Ireland, ultimately aiding its return to the Republic.

The UCI yesterday confirmed the 2023-24 World Cup schedule, with the Dublin round coming back, on the last weekend of November, following its first visit last December. This time around there will be World Cup racing for all categories - elites, U23s and juniors - on the Sport Ireland Campus in Blanchardstown.

“The inclusion of UCI Cyclocross World Cup Dublin in the 2023-24 season is a testament to the success of the event last December. 8,000 Irish fans created a fantastic atmosphere at the Sport Ireland Campus," said Cycling Ireland interim chief executive Chris Kitchen.

"And we’re delighted to see their support and dedication to the sport rewarded with Dublin’s inclusion on the schedule. We’re looking forward to working with all the stakeholders involved in the coming months to help make the 2023 edition even bigger and better. We also want to see the event create a longer term legacy and inspire future generations of cyclists.”

Sport Ireland chief executive, Una May, echoed those sentiments, saying last year’s event was "hugely successful, bringing many of the world's top cyclists" to Ireland.

"The strong attendance at the Dublin round showed the demand for this event both among our domestic fans and international visitors. It was also viewed by a large television audience across Europe," May.

"We hope that the world class facilities at Sport Ireland Campus are home to events of this scale on an ongoing basis, and naturally welcome the inclusion of a Dublin round in the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup calendar next season. We look forward to working with our partners the UCI, Flanders Classics and Cycling Ireland to build on last year’s success."
