British Continental team AT85 Pro Cycling, formerly Wiv SunGod, has collapsed over funding and sponsorship issues just weeks into the new season. It comes as British cycling is facing significant issues in the post-Brexit period, with the Tour Series taking a break for this year and the Women's Tour professional stage race also in financial trouble.

The collapse of AT85 Pro Cycling is a major blow, especially for Ireland's Rás Tailteann double stage winner Matt Teggart, who is now left without a team for the 2023 campaign.

Teggart joined the team at the start of last year and was one of its star riders on the Tour of Britain, taking an aggressive approach and winning the sprints classification.

The team has confirmed via a statement today, Friday, it has ceased operations, citing sponsorship issues which have left an insurmountable hole in its funding for this year.

Team owner, Tim Elverson, described himself as "heartbroken", saying he had been left with "no option but to shut the team's doors with immediate effect".

"Due to funding issues and an increasingly uncertain banking and finance sector, we are unable to commit to the financial outlays required to continue to race our intended programme in the UK and Europe," he said.

"It is hard to find the right words, but we could like to thank all of our riders and staff for the enormous amount of work already done this season."

More to come.
